Floor Tiles: Types, Sizes, Prices & Buying Guide 2026

Most people shopping for floor tiles start with a photo on their phone a marble-look living room from an Instagram reel, a wood-look bedroom from a friend's flat. Nobody starts with "water absorption group" or "DCOF rating." And yet those two boring terms decide whether that same floor still looks good in five years, or whether it's cracking at the edges after one monsoon.

That gap between how people shop and what actually determines a good floor is where most buyers get it wrong. Not because they picked an ugly tile. Because nobody told them what a floor tile actually needs to survive Indian homes: heat, humidity, wet feet, and the odd dropped pressure cooker.

This guide covers floor tiles the way we'd walk you through it on a factory floor in Morbi what the categories really mean, which size suits which room, what actually affects price, and where buyers consistently lose money without realizing it. If you're comparing floor tiles design options, checking floor tiles price in India, or narrowing down types of floor tiles for a specific room, you'll find it here.

One thing worth saying upfront: this article covers general buying guidance, not a specific product's certified test data. Where safety or structural performance matters slip resistance in a shower, load-bearing in a garage always ask your dealer for the actual test report of the exact tile you're buying, not the category average.

  • About Floor Tiles
Quick Take

☑️ Small apartment: Larger-format tiles (600×1200mm+) with fewer grout lines make a compact room look bigger.
☑️ Luxury home: PGVT or bookmatch-style large slabs in formal areas, matte full-body vitrified in daily-use zones.
☑️ Rental property: Mid-range ceramic or standard vitrified durability without over-investing in a space you don't own long-term.
☑️ Tight budget: Standard vitrified in 600×600mm gets you most of the durability of premium options at a lower per-box cost.

What Are Floor Tiles and How Are They Different by Tile Body?

A floor tile isn't one material it's an application. The same tile body can be sold as a wall tile or a floor tile depending on thickness, strength, and how it's fired. So "floor tiles" really means: which body, which finish, which size, for which room.

Floor tiles are hard-surface flooring units, typically ceramic or vitrified, fired at high temperature and classified by how much water they absorb. Water absorption is one of the first technical indicators to check because it helps classify the tile and understand its moisture-related performance. Strength, wear, slip resistance and application suitability require additional tests.

Here's the quick technical map, and don't worry, we'll come back to each piece:

  • Ceramic tiles semi-vitreous to non-vitreous body, water absorption typically above 3%, lighter-duty, budget-friendly.
  • Vitrified tiles fired at higher temperature for a denser, low-absorption body (Group BIa, water absorption ≤0.5% under ISO 13006), frost- and stain-resistant, the default choice for most Indian floors today.
  • Full-body vitrified material colour runs through the entire thickness, so a chip doesn't show a different colour underneath. This is the term the Indian trade uses. Some international sellers use related terms such as "through-body porcelain" but terminology and classification can vary by manufacturer and market, so always verify the actual body construction and test data for the specific product rather than assuming a label alone guarantees equivalence.
  • Double charge vitrified colour applied to a thicker top layer during pressing; actual performance depends on the body, manufacturing quality and declared test data rather than the category alone.

We're not going to pretend every marketing label is a separate material. GVT and PGVT, which you'll see everywhere, are finishes and processing steps within the vitrified category not a rival material to porcelain. More on that next.

Types of Floor Tiles Available in India

GVT (Glazed Vitrified Tiles) are vitrified tiles finished with a digital glaze layer on top, giving near-unlimited design options wood, marble, stone, whatever the print head can lay down. PGVT (Polished Glazed Vitrified Tiles) take that same GVT base and mechanically polish the surface after firing, which is why PGVT floors have that mirror-like shine GVT alone doesn't quite reach.

Type Body Typical Finish Best For Watch Out For
Ceramic Semi-vitreous Glazed matte/gloss Bedrooms, low-traffic areas, tight budgets Lower impact resistance
Vitrified (GVT) Glazed (vitrified body) Matte, satin, wood/stone-look Living rooms, most residential floors Glaze can wear thin over decades of heavy traffic
PGVT Vitrified, polished High gloss Formal living rooms, showrooms High-polish surface can present greater slip risk when wet; verify wet slip-performance data before using as a bathroom floor.
Full-Body Vitrified Solid colour body Matte, textured, sugar High-traffic commercial, heavy residential Design range slightly narrower than GVT
Double Charge Vitrified Layered colour Matte, semi-polish Mid-budget commercial, corridors Pattern depth less than full-body
Porcelain Vitrified, ≤0.5% WA Matte, polished, textured Outdoor, wet zones, export-grade projects Pricier; verify actual WA test data

One thing many buyers overlook: none of these categories automatically guarantees performance. A PGVT tile from one factory and another factory's PGVT can differ in hardness and consistency. The classification tells you the family it doesn't replace checking the actual spec sheet.

How to Choose Floor Tiles for Different Areas

Room-by-room, the decision comes down to three things: how wet the floor gets, how much foot traffic it sees, and how much you'll clean it.

  • Living room / bedroom matte or satin GVT in 600×1200mm or larger reads well and hides footprints better than gloss.
  • Kitchen go matte or lightly textured near the cooking and sink zone; oil spills on gloss are a slip risk nobody mentions until it happens.
  • Bathroom this is where slip resistance actually matters, not just finish name. More on that in the technical section.
  • Balcony / terrace needs weather resistance and a textured or anti-skid surface; full-body vitrified is generally suited to outdoor weathering, but confirm the specific product's water absorption, strength and slip-performance data before choosing it for sun- and rain-exposed areas.
  • Parking / heavy commercial full-body vitrified or a dedicated parking-grade tile, chosen for breaking strength, impact resistance and abrasion performance under tyre loads not for PEI rating alone. Ask for parking-grade test data specific to the application.

Where floor tiles aren't the right call: if you're renting short-term and expect to move in a year or two, tiling is a sunk cost you can't take with you vinyl or laminate might serve better. On upper floors of older structures with lightweight or wooden framing not built for tile loads, a structural check should come before the tile order, not after. And for spaces where you want warmth underfoot without heating a child's playroom in a cold climate zone, for instance tile can feel cold underfoot in cooler conditions because it readily draws heat from your feet; if warmth is a priority, consider the room's insulation or underfloor-heating requirements.

Floor Tile Sizes: 600×600, 600×1200 and Large Formats

600×600mm (2×2 ft) remains widely used in Indian homes it's forgiving on uneven old subfloors and every mason knows how to lay it. 600×1200mm (2×4 ft) is increasingly common in living rooms and larger bedrooms because fewer joints mean a cleaner look.

Beyond that, large-format slabs 800×1600mm, and Morbi's larger production formats running up to 800×3200mm, 1200×3000mm, 1200×3200mm and 1600×3200mm are where premium residential and commercial projects are heading. These are typically rectified for straight, precise edges, which allows very narrow, visually minimal grout joints though the achievable joint width still depends on the substrate and installation system. Big slabs, a genuinely different look from standard tile.

Where large format isn't the right call: on an old, uneven, or structurally shaky subfloor, big slabs show every imperfection and are far less forgiving to lay than 600×600mm. They typically need a trained handling team with suction or vacuum lifting equipment exact manpower depends on slab size, weight and site access. If your local installer has never laid anything above 600×1200mm, that's worth knowing before you commit, not after a slab cracks in transit or on-site.

For smaller sizes still in demand for specific uses bathroom accents, skirting, and older-style layouts 300×300mm and 300×600mm formats remain available, alongside standard 600×600mm and 600×1200mm as the workhorse sizes for most rooms.

Floor Tile Finishes: Matte, Glossy, Polished and Anti-Skid

Matte and textured finishes have been outpacing glossy in the mid-to-premium segment, and it's not purely aesthetic matte hides dust and scratches better, feels softer underfoot, and doesn't glare under bright lighting. Glossy and polished finishes still win on formal, low-traffic spaces where that reflective look matters more than practicality. Carving and sugar-texture finishes are also seeing rising design interest across both Tier 1 and Tier 2 markets, though buyers should weigh that appeal against the maintenance trade-offs of heavier texture in daily-use areas. Nano-polish is a market term used for certain surface treatments; ask the supplier what process the specific product uses and how it affects gloss, maintenance and stain performance.

Floor tile finishes compared with matte glossy polished and textured anti-skid surfaces in Indian residential spaces

Myth vs Reality

Myth Reality
"Matte tiles are automatically slip-proof." Slip resistance is a measurable, tested property (DCOF/R-rating), not something a finish name guarantees. A matte tile can still test poorly if it wasn't designed for wet zones.
"Thicker tiles are always stronger." Strength comes from firing density and body composition, not thickness alone. A well-fired thinner tile can outperform a poorly fired thick one.
"Ceramic and vitrified are basically the same." Vitrified tiles are fired at higher temperatures to a denser, low-absorption body meaningfully more frost- and stain-resistant than standard ceramic.

Where installers and architects disagree: it's tempting to spec the highest anti-skid rating everywhere "to be safe." In practice, heavily textured anti-skid tiles (the kind rated for wet commercial ramps) are genuinely hard to mop and trap grit in daily residential use. Architects sometimes over-specify for liability reasons; installers who have to maintain the finished floor tend to push back. For a covered indoor balcony, a moderate anti-skid finish is usually enough save the aggressive texture for open, rain-exposed areas.

Floor Tiles Technical Specifications Buyers Should Check

This is the part most buying guides skip, and it's the part that actually protects you.

Water absorption is a key classification property and moisture-performance indicator; strength, abrasion, surface and application also matter. Under ISO 13006, Group BIa (porcelain/fully vitrified) tiles absorb ≤0.5% water the toughest, most stain- and frost-resistant category. In India, vitrified tile specifications including breaking strength and water absorption limits are governed by IS 15622. Standard ceramic floor tiles typically fall well above the Group BIa threshold. Ask your dealer for the declared water-absorption value and the applicable test documentation for the exact product.

PEI Rating classifies the surface abrasion resistance of glazed tiles on a Class I to V scale. Class III suits normal residential foot traffic; Class IV–V is for commercial and heavy-traffic zones. PEI does not measure structural strength or slip resistance those require separate tests, and it's the distinction buyers most often confuse.

Floor tile durability infographic showing DCOF PEI grout selection porcelain and structural performance factors

DCOF (Dynamic Coefficient of Friction), tested per ANSI A326.3, is the modern standard for slip resistance replacing older static-friction tests that regulators and manufacturers have largely moved away from. A wet DCOF of 0.42 is a commonly referenced criterion for relevant level wet interior applications under ANSI, but it is not a universal guarantee of slip safety for every wet application. Shower and barefoot-contact zones typically call for higher performance, so ask for the specific product's test report rather than assuming a single number applies everywhere. A tile's tested DCOF also isn't the whole story on site contaminants, drainage, cleaning and maintenance routine, footwear or barefoot use, foot traffic, and actual site conditions all affect real-world slip performance too. Separately, the R-rating scale (R9 through R12, sometimes R13) used internationally for ramped/outdoor surfaces measures friction differently the two systems don't translate directly, so if a dealer quotes an R-rating for an indoor bathroom tile, ask for the DCOF number too.

Modulus of Rupture (MOR) is the flexural strength test how much force a tile withstands before cracking, evaluated under the IS 13630 series of test methods (ask your supplier to confirm the exact applicable part for the product you're buying). This is the number that actually predicts whether a tile holds up under a dropped object or point load, not the marketing phrase "extra strong."

Direct Answers, For Quick Reference

What is GVT?

Glazed Vitrified Tile a vitrified body finished with a digital glaze layer, giving wide design flexibility.

What is PGVT?

A GVT tile that's been mechanically polished after firing for a glossy surface.

What's a safe DCOF for a wet bathroom floor?

A wet DCOF of 0.42 is a commonly referenced criterion for level indoor wet areas under ANSI, but it is not a universal guarantee of slip safety showers and barefoot zones often need higher performance, and actual site conditions matter too. Always verify the specific product's test data rather than relying on one number.

Does a high PEI rating mean the tile is slip-resistant?

No. PEI classifies surface abrasion resistance on glazed tiles; slip resistance is a separate DCOF/R-rating test.

Is full-body vitrified the same as through-body porcelain?

They describe closely related constructions, but terminology and classification can vary by manufacturer and market verify the actual body construction and test data for the specific product rather than relying on the label alone.

Floor Tiles Price in India: What Affects the Cost?

Price varies by brand and location. Verify with your local tile dealer.

That's not a dodge it's genuinely the honest answer, because price on the same tile category swings on several variables at once: tile body, size, finish, surface treatment, grade, order quantity, GST, freight, and dealer margin. A quote for the same GVT tile can differ meaningfully between a metro city and a Tier-2 town once transport and local dealer overheads are added always compare landed price, not just the ex-factory rate someone quotes over the phone.

What's fixed and worth knowing regardless of brand:

  • GST on tiles is 18% ask for this shown separately on the quote so you're comparing like-for-like.
  • Morbi lead time typically runs 3–10 days for standard stock, depending on quantity and destination.
  • Metro vs Tier-2 pricing gap persists mainly due to freight, local dealer stocking costs, and market competition always verify locally rather than assuming a national "starting from" price applies to you.

Large-format slabs (800×1600mm and above) carry a price premium over standard sizes partly material, partly the specialised handling and installation labour they require. Factor that into the comparison, not just the per-box or per-square-foot sticker price.

How Much Floor Tile Quantity Do You Need?

Calculate your area in square feet (or square metres), then add wastage and this is where the old "10%" habit needs updating. Straight-lay patterns in standard rooms typically need 5–10% extra for cuts and breakage. Complex layouts herringbone, chevron, diagonal, or anything with a lot of edge cutting genuinely need 15–20% extra; the cutting waste on these patterns is significantly higher than a straight grid, and running short mid-installation with a different batch is worse than over-ordering.

Large-format tiles (800×1600mm and above) also lean toward the higher end of that range a single miscut on an oversized slab wastes far more material than a miscut on a 600×600mm piece.

A simple size-comparison and quantity checklist goes a long way here matching pattern choice, room geometry, and tile format before you place the order, not after the first box is opened.

Floor Tile Installation: Adhesive, Joints and Site Preparation

Substrate flatness comes first. Uneven subfloors get corrected with self-levelling compound not by piling on extra tile adhesive, which is meant to bond, not to level. Skipping this step is one of the more common causes of problems that show up weeks later.

Spacers should sit at 2–3mm for standard tiles, and larger-format slabs often need levelling clips to prevent lippage uneven edges between adjacent tiles especially where the floor isn't perfectly flat. For large slabs, laying in a staggered offset rather than a 50/50 brick pattern also reduces lippage risk at the joints.

Expansion or movement joints matter more than most buyers realise, particularly for big open floors and rooms exposed to strong heat swings a west-facing balcony, for instance. These joints accommodate thermal expansion and contraction, moisture-related movement in the substrate and tile assembly, and structural movement in the building itself; without a gap to absorb that movement at the perimeter, the floor has nowhere to push except upward, which is exactly how tiles start lifting or "tenting" months after handover.

Installer laying 600x1200mm vitrified floor tiles with adhesive spacers and levelling tools at Indian construction site

What Most Installers Will Tell You: incomplete adhesive coverage and poor contact can contribute to hollow sounds and later debonding, particularly with large-format tiles. Ask your installer how they will achieve the required adhesive coverage.

For vitrified and full-body vitrified tiles, use a polymer-modified tile adhesive conforming to IS 15477 plain sand-cement mix bonds poorly to the tile's low-absorption body and is a common cause of hollow spots and later debonding, especially on large-format tiles that need full, even adhesive coverage. The exact adhesive category and application method should match the tile size, substrate and installation system ask your adhesive supplier or installer to confirm the correct product for your specific tile rather than assuming one adhesive spec fits every job.

For wet or heavy-traffic commercial zones kitchens, hotel corridors standard cement grout can degrade under repeated chemical cleaning; epoxy grout holds up far better there, even though it costs more and cures faster, which makes it trickier to install. For most residential rooms, standard cement grout is fine.

Common Floor Tile Buying Mistakes

  • Ignoring batch/lot numbers tiles from different production batches can carry subtle shade differences, even within the same product code.
  • Ordering the exact quantity with zero buffer see the wastage guidance above; matching a discontinued batch later is genuinely difficult.
  • Wrong finish for wet areas a beautiful high-gloss PGVT floor in a bathroom is a slip hazard waiting to happen.
  • Ignoring slip resistance data entirely asking "is it anti-skid?" isn't enough; ask for the DCOF or R-rating number.
  • Not verifying grade A-grade, B-grade, and export-reject stock of the visually identical tile can differ in caliber (size tolerance) and surface consistency, often at a noticeably different price. Ask which grade you're being quoted.
  • Assuming warranty covers installation most manufacturer warranties cover material defects, not damage from poor installation, subfloor issues, or the wrong adhesive system. Read what's actually covered before you rely on it.

Floor tile buying mistakes showing shade mismatch grout variation and unsuitable glossy finish in Indian home

Why Buy Floor Tiles from Morbi?

Morbi, Gujarat, produces a large share of India's floor tile output, and that scale is exactly why sourcing here matters for buyers wider size and finish availability, faster restocking, and manufacturer-level pricing transparency that a multi-layer retail chain often can't offer. Morbitaa Buildmart LLP works as one of the Morbi tile suppliers operating as a manufacturer-partner within this cluster, which means the sourcing story here isn't a claim, it's the actual supply chain: factory to dealer to your project, with fewer markups in between.

What most buyers never ask about: batch mismatch and thickness variation are real, even from established factories no manufacturer's output is perfectly uniform box to box. Honestly, this is the most overlooked detail in any tile project: dry-laying tiles from multiple boxes before fixing anything permanently catches shade and caliber differences while they're still fixable. Some transport breakage is also normal for ceramic and vitrified shipments the exact rate depends on packaging, palletisation, handling, and route, so ask your supplier what allowance they typically build in and plan your order quantity accordingly, rather than assuming zero breakage. None of this is unique to Morbi; it's true of tile manufacturing generally, and any factory that claims zero variation isn't being straight with you.

Floor Tiles for Dealers, Builders and Export Buyers

Homeowner-focused guides rarely mention this, but a meaningful share of floor tile demand is B2B dealers stocking for resale, builders specifying for projects, and export buyers sourcing from the Morbi/Rajkot/Jamnagar cluster for markets including UAE, Africa, and Southeast Asia.

For dealers and distributors, the priorities are consistent assortment, repeat availability, and predictable dispatch plus clarity on caliber and shade-lot matching across repeat orders, since a mismatched batch reaching a retail shelf is a dealer's problem to fix, not the factory's.

For builders and architects, project-level consistency matters more than any single spec sheet number the same batch, the same caliber, across the full quantity needed for a project, with documentation to back technical claims when a client or consultant asks.

For export and import buyers, the practical questions are container/pallet loading efficiency, packaging quality for long transit, product consistency across the full order, and destination documentation requirements. None of that comes with an invented price export and wholesale rates depend on destination, quantity, specification, and current freight conditions, so treat any "starting from" FOB figure you see online with caution and ask for a quotation against your actual requirement.

Floor tiles look like a simple decision until you're standing in a dealer showroom with six similar-looking boxes and a delivery deadline. The categories, sizes, and finishes matter less on their own than how they line up with your specific room its water exposure, its traffic, its subfloor condition.

Frequently Asked Questions

Get answers to common questions about floor tiles

What are the main types of floor tiles available in India?

The core categories are ceramic, vitrified (including GVT and PGVT), full-body vitrified material, double charge vitrified and porcelain each differing mainly in water absorption, strength, and finish options rather than being entirely separate materials.

Which floor tile size is best for a living room 600×600mm or 600×1200mm?

Both work well; 600×1200mm gives fewer grout lines and a slightly more spacious look in medium-to-large rooms, while 600×600mm is more forgiving on uneven subfloors and remains the more commonly fitted size overall.

Are glossy floor tiles suitable for bathrooms?

Generally not recommended. High-gloss and PGVT finishes reduce slip resistance in wet conditions; matte or textured tiles with verified DCOF/anti-skid ratings are the safer choice for wet-area floors.

What is the difference between GVT and PGVT floor tiles?

GVT is a digitally glazed vitrified tile; PGVT is that same base tile mechanically polished after firing for a glossier surface. Both are vitrified tile categories, while full-body vitrified material refers to a different body construction; verify the actual body and technical specifications of the product you are buying.

What GST rate applies to floor tiles in India?

Floor tiles attract 18% GST. Always ask your dealer to show this separately on the quote, alongside any freight charges, so you're comparing landed prices rather than base rates against a competitor's all-inclusive figure.

How much tile wastage should I add when ordering?

Budget 5–10% extra for standard straight-lay patterns, and 15–20% for complex layouts like herringbone or diagonal, or for large-format tiles above 800×1600mm. If you're unsure which bracket applies to your layout, ask your installer to review the room plan before you place the final order.
