The R-rating is the one number that actually decides whether a tile will grip or slip. Most buyers choose by texture feel in the showroom. That is the wrong method.

R-ratings under DIN 51130 are tested with oil on an inclined surface, not just water. A tile that feels rough can still fail the moment cooking oil hits the floor. Here is the correct way to match R-rating to area:
R9: Dry areas only. Not suitable for kitchens, bathrooms, or any floor that sees regular water or oil.
R10: Minimum for kitchens and bathrooms. Tested on a 10 to 19 degree incline with oil underfoot. Handles daily water, cooking spills, and mop cleaning.
R11: Terraces, balconies, outdoor staircases, and heavy wet zones. Required where rain exposure is regular.
R12 to R13: Parking lots, industrial ramps, and high-footfall commercial floors.
If your space sees cooking, cleaning, or rain, start at R10. Homes with elderly members or children should not go below R10 in any wet area.
Ceramic: Water absorption 3 to 10 percent. Works for lightly wet indoor spaces and budget projects. Not the right choice for outdoor use or kitchens with heavy oil exposure.
Vitrified: Water absorption 0.5 percent or less. The most widely ordered anti skid tile from Morbi for kitchen and bathroom floors. Handles daily water, mop cleaning, and oil exposure without surface damage.
Porcelain: Water absorption 0.3 percent or less. Full-body composition makes it the strongest option for outdoor areas, parking, and terraces. Surface wear does not reduce grip over time.
300x300 mm and 400x400 mm: More grout joints create more friction lines. Better for bathrooms, utility zones, and staircases. More cleaning effort on grout over time.
600x600 mm: Most frequently dispatched size from Morbi for kitchen and bathroom floors. Balances grip, cleaning ease, and visual finish well.
800x1600 mm: Fewer joints, cleaner look. Grip depends entirely on surface R-rating. Suited for large indoor areas only.

From walking the Morbi godowns for years, I've seen countless buyers make the same sizing and rating errors.
Buying by texture feel: A tile that feels rough in the showroom is not automatically R10 rated. Always ask for the DIN 51130 R-rating before confirming.
Using bathroom tiles in the kitchen: Water resistance and oil resistance are different. Bathroom-rated tiles may not hold grip under cooking grease. Verify the rating covers oil testing.
Picking deep texture for looks: Heavily embossed tiles trap grease and soap in the grooves. A matte flat surface at R10 is easier to maintain and performs equally well for daily use.
Installing wall tiles on floors: Wall tiles are not load-rated for foot traffic. Risk of structural failure is real, especially under kitchen use.
Wrong adhesive for outdoor areas: Use weather-rated adhesive for all terrace, balcony, and parking tile installations. Epoxy grout is strongly recommended for wet outdoor joints.

R10 is the minimum for any Indian kitchen. The DIN 51130 standard tests R-ratings with oil on an inclined surface, which closely matches real kitchen conditions. R9 tiles often feel grippy in the showroom but slip badly under cooking oil. For kitchens that see daily cooking, R10 tile is essential.

Yes, if it is R10 rated vitrified in matte finish it works well for both. The key check is whether the tile was tested under DIN 51130 oil conditions and not just standard water exposure. Kitchens face cooking grease in addition to water, so oil-tested rating matters more here than in bathrooms.
600x600 mm porcelain full-body rough at R11 or above is the right choice. Full-body porcelain handles rain exposure, temperature variation, and outdoor wear better than vitrified or ceramic. The full-body composition means grip stays consistent even as the surface wears over years of outdoor use.
